Monster Reset

Over the past month or so, Rob, Ash and Steve have been working furiously to reset the whole of the centre.

Since June:

  • Every circuit on the Wave/Bleaustone Wall/Traverse Corridor has been reset;
  • There's been a new section of wall built in the furnace, creating a whole new line (and meaning I got to paint in a number '36' at the bottom of the wall);
  • The CragX vert wall has been reset;
  • The Livingstone wall has been reset;
  • The yellow slab has been reset;
  • 40 NEW ROUTES have gone up on the Main wall;
  • The whole of the Furnace has had a reset...

.... And every volume in the centre has been taken down, filled, painted and put back up somewhere else.

We just need to get the Green slab reset next week to get full marks.

Our route setters have really busted a gut to get such a big selection of top quality routes on the wall; and this is all before the winter season has got underway!

Over the coming months, look out for the return of dry tooling, the winter bouldering league, the BMC's leading ladder, and another gazillion or so new routes and boulder problems. There will also be some pretty hefty deals a-happenin at CragX.

So stay tuned!

2nd Hand Kit Sale - 4th-6th March, Showroom Cinema

Got any unloved climbing gear gathering cobwebs at the bottom of your climbing sack, still safe but heavy and unused since you upgraded to the latest shiny lightweight models?

Climbing boots you bought for a bargain, but which never actually fitted?

Winter sleeping bag bought for the trip of a lifetime, but you will never actually use again?

Kids outdoor clothing, outgrown but still with with plenty of life in it?

We've all got gear we bought on impulse and regretted, or which whilst still serviceable is now unused and just clutter at the back of a wardrobe. So this is your chance to sell off your unwanted gear and raise funds for more shinny bits.

Like a car boot sale but based on what can be fitted into a rucksack, this sale of outdoor kit will take place throughout the ShAFF weekend - please contact CragX for more information or to book a table.

For those wanting to buy, please note this is a CASH ONLY sale - although there are plenty of local cash machines.

Core DVD now in

We've been getting badgered for a while about when Core DVD would be here. It's been out for a while on this BluRay nonsense but is now finally here on proper DVD.
Featuring Nalle Hukkataival, Matt Wilder, Fred Nicole, Kevin Jorgeson and more it promises to be quite a crushfest.

And for those inspired By Fred to get out there and pull on some swiss boulders - we have just taken delivery of the new SwissBloc vol1. Covering Magic Wood, Sustenpass and much more. This is the first of two volumes by Gebro Verlag (Publishers of EBloc, IBloc and BlocHeart, which SwissBloc replaces).

We have just had delivery of another three new Evolv rock shoe models at CragX. The Optimus Prime, Bandit and Royale bring us up to nine Evolv rock shoes - more than any other stockist. See them all here.

We've had the best range of FiveTen shoes in the country for a while and we're really pleased to be able to say the same for Evolv. With 35 rock shoe models kept in stock (and that doesn't include clearance oddments) we have the best range by far in the Sheffield area and one of the best ranges in the country.

Boreal Boot Demo

Last night was the change to try a pair of Boreal Rockshoes for free. A few years ago it was at a demo that I found the "perfect" pair of rockshoes, so I can testify that this is a great opportunity to actually try new shoes out before you make the decision to part with your hard earnt cash.

Unfortunatly due to their poplularity the Storm have been so sought after by retailers that they haven't yet made it into the demo collection. However there was still a good range of shoes, including the ever popular Joker Lace and Luna and for the higher end climbers the Crux and Falcon.

The Team 5.10 is here now

FiveTen were unusually efficient and we got the Team last night, the very day that we were told they were finally coming. We only have limited numbers of some sizes so get here quickly to avoid disappointment.

NEW DMM Torque Nuts have arrived!

For years we have refused to stock 'sets' of hexes because the pack always included a number of smaller sizes that overlapped with conventional nuts. We found most customers only wanted hexes that were bigger than the wired nuts, so although we stocked all sizes we felt the sets encouraged beginners to buy gear they were unlikely to want or need in the long term.

DMM are the first manufacturer to have thought this through so we are happy to finally be able to break our own rule. We now stock the superb new DMM Torque nuts, very light, very colourful very effective and with an extendible sling. They suit from a thin hand to a standard fist crack - available loose or as a complete set of 4.

Five Ten V10 replacement

It looks as though 5.10 have finally brought out a direct replacement of the much-loved V10 slipper. The new shoe is being called the 5.10 Team and it pretty much like a V10 with an single velcro strap added.

You might be thinking this isn't news - pictures of it have been around on the forums for a while now but I've learnt not to judge a rock shoe until I've had it on my foot. A shoe that looks great in a picture can turn out to be terrible. Luckily, I had the chance to try them on at the Outdoor Show in Friedrichshafen.

So, what can I tell you, having tried it on a couple of times? The Team does seem to be built on the same last shape as the V10 and Dragon which will please a lot of people. It felt pretty good to me pulling it on for the first time. I'd guess it might be a little softer out of the box than the V10 but I could be wrong – I haven't worn any V10s for quite a while now. It has the new Mystique rubber that is on the Project but in a sensible thickness and with the usual horseshoe midsole so it isn't as crazily soft as the Project. The velcro strap should work well but does mean that this is not going to be priced like slippers of old – expect to pay top wack for this one. Lastly, the tow rubber is proper rubber, not stealth paint like the Jet7 but it does give a bit and is a sensible thickness so I doubt anyone will feel the need to take a razor to it.

There are lots of things that we won't know until these have got to the shops and on peoples feet in the real world (like how much they might stretch) but so far the Team seems to be the first real V10 replacement.

Five Ten are making a limited production run of these for this Autumn so we should get some in around September or October. They will be widely available in the UK in Spring 10.

Cliffhanger 2009

This was the third year CragX has been at Cliffhanger and thanks to the weather staying dry was the best attended yet. The DMM pull tester broke lots of karabiners, in a bid to demonstrate just how strong climbing gear actually is.

The new "Improved" pull up challenge using a Beastmaker 1000 certainly added interest to the competition. Winners will be notified by email once we have managed to enter you all onto the computer.
